DAY 1 (August 30) DUBROVNIK

Transfer from Dubrovnik airport to your Hotel for check-in from 2 PM onwards. After settling in, you will have a welcome reception at your Hotel followed by a guided tour of the city. The special charm of this ancient town are the buildings that have remained from the time of the old Dubrovnik Republic. Many of the monuments belong to the modest Renaissance architecture with some traces of Gothic style. Take the cable car from the Old Town to Srđ mountain to enjoy scenic views of the mighty ramparts and of the Elaphiti Islands. After the tour, you will have some free time before we meet up for welcome dinner in one of the traditional restaurants in Dubrovnik. Return transfer to your Hotel. Overnight in Dubrovnik.

DAY 2 (August 31) DUBROVNIK - MLJET

Buffet Breakfast on board. This morning you will have free time to explore Dubrovnik by strolling around in its narrow streets and small squares, shop on the Stradun street, and explore Game of Thrones locations. Transfer to your ship M/S Equator at 2 PM followed by welcome meet & greet cocktail reception on board. Departure to the island of Mljet. Enjoy the magical scenery as the ship cruises around Dubrovnik city walls before heading north to one of the Elaphiti islands for a swimming stop. We continue our journey towards the island and national park Mljet with lunch on board. Overnight in Pomena (Mljet)

DAY 3 (September 1) MLJET - KORCULA

Buffet Breakfast on board. Today, we will explore the island of Mljet. The legend says Greek hero Odysseus spent years on this island when he was captured by the nymph Calypso. Join the cruise manager for a stroll to the famous salt lakes in the Mljet National Park and enjoy the boat ride to St Mary Isle to visit an ancient Benedictine monastery, an old abbey and a Church dating back to the 12th Century. Alternatively, you can rent kayaks, bicycles, scooters or convertible cars to roam around the National Park or island on your own, but beware of the nymphs! This afternoon, we will depart towards the island of Korčula, best known as the birthplace of Marco Polo. Stop for lunch on board in one of the secluded bays en route. Late afternoon arrival in Korčula Town followed by a guided walking tour of this enchanting place surrounded by walls and one of the best preserved medieval cities in the Mediterranean. Fish bone street pattern was used in the design of Korcula Old Town for a natural cooling effect and it provides citizens with sheltered and comfortable accommodation. Korčula has an abundant choice of restaurants to enjoy a gourmet experience and numerous bars for those looking for evening entertainment. Optional excursion to small village near Korčula Town for typical Dalmatian dinner and to learn about the history and traditional way of living. Overnight in Korčula Town.

DAY 4 (September 2) KORCULA - VIS

Buffet Breakfast on board. Today, we will be active cycling from Korcula Town to Lumbarda (usual route approx. 10 miles / 1 hour 15-30 minutes, but it is possible to do a shorter ride). For those who don’t want to cycle, there will be free time to explore Korcula Town before you will be transferred by vehicle to Lumbarda to meet with the cyclers for wine tasting (2-3 wines) and light lunch (Dalmatian platter: prsut, cheese, olives, bread followed by ‘hrstule’ for a dessert). Transfer by coach to Vela Luka where we will visit olive oil production site followed by informal tasting of oils/preserves. Back to the ship before continuing our journey to the island of Vis. Dinner on board. Overnight in Vis.

DAY 5 (September 3) VIS - BISEVO - HVAR TOWN

Breakfast on board. Once a strategic naval Yugoslav base and closed to the public for years, Vis has a special charm – “the Mediterranean as it once was” making it really interesting to visit. Vis town, situated on the northern side of the island, has developed near the remains of ancient Issa, the first urban center in Croatia. Try some exquisite local wines in one of the Vis traditional wineries. If interested, visit the remains of the Roman thermal place, City museum or simply take a walk enjoying the views of the beautiful Villae Rusticae situated along the waterfront. This afternoon, we cruise towards the small island of Biševo to visit the Blue Cave, a magnificent natural phenomenon. As sometimes weather conditions can be very unpredictable, the possibility of our visit will depend on those conditions, however you will be notified of this on time. Continue towards the jet-set island of Hvar with a swimming stop and lunch on board at the Pakleni Islands. Hvar, the longest and sunniest island in the Adriatic is known for glorious lavender fields and breathtaking beauty. In the evening Hvar offers an abundance of entertainment – numerous restaurants, bars and clubs, many open long into the night. Overnight in Hvar Town

DAY 6 (September 4) HVAR TOWN

Breakfast on board. Hvar, one of the most popular islands in the Adriatic and a meeting point for the international jet-set. The “Croatian Madeira” is also one of the longest islands stretching along the shores of Croatia. This morning, we will have guided tour of the town – the Renaissance cathedral with its original tower, and the oldest community theatre in Europe founded in 1612. Hike up the zig-zag path to the town fort overlooking the harbour for lovely scenic views of your ship and the Paklinski Islands. In the afternoon, an optional cycling tour will be arranged. You will cycle from Hvar Town on a winding road to a viewpoint from where you can see a beautiful panorama of Hvar and all the islands. As we continue our ride, we will pass through 3 villages and also stop in one of them for a tasting of local products. Feel the sense of history mixed with fresh air and great food. The ride is 50-50 of gravel road and asphalt. Dinner on board. Overnight in Hvar Town

DAY 7 (September 5) HVAR TOWN - BOL - SPLIT

Breakfast on board. Morning departure to Brač island where swimming is planned at the most famous beach in Dalmatia – Zlatni Rat near Bol – whose shingle promontory shifts from side to side as the wind and waves constantly cause the shape to change. Bol is a typical fishermen’s village converted into a popular tourist destination yet retaining its charm. We will spend a day here before continuing for Split. On route to our last destination, we will be welcomed by Captain’s dinner with live music on board. Overnight in Split.

DAY 8 (September 6) SPLIT

Breakfast on board. This morning we will have a tour of Split with a licenced guide. The guided walking tour of Split shows us the historic inner city, built around the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. You will see the remnants of Split’s Roman heritage, it’s Renaissance and Gothic structures, Jupiter’s Temple, the Peristyle, and the Cathedral. The rest of the day at leisure.

Dubrovnik

Overlooking the calm blue waters of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik is one of the world’s most magnificent walled cities. Now a UNESCO world heritage site and Croatia’s most popular destination, it was once the capital of the maritime republic, The Republic of Ragusa (1358-1808).
The city walls, mostly a double line, have been a source of pride for Dubrovnik since the 16th century. Along its course and within its walls lie several towers and fortresses, as well as numerous historic monuments. And beyond the walls, many villas surrounded by pretty gardens. The Stradun, or main street features beautiful late-Renaissance houses on each side. Except for the Stradun, the old city is a maze of picturesque, steep, narrow streets that twist and turn.

Mljet

It is Croatia’s greenest island with its Mediterranean vegetation, clear and clean sea, gentle sandy shoreline and a wealth of underwater sea life. The island is considered to be one of the most beautiful of the Croatian islands. Half Mljet island is a pristine national park. There are few residents, no large towns and only one major road. Mljet is well known for its white and red wine, olives and goat cheese. It is indeed a unspoilt island covered by a dense Mediterranean forest. The sea is rich in fish and marine life.

Korcula

Korcula is best known as the birthplace of Marco Polo. The island is a little further away to get to so you have fewer crowds and can enjoy the island more! So lush with dark pine forests, vineyards and olive groves the ancient Greek settlers called it Korkyra Melaina (‘Black Corfu’), Korcula has managed to avoid the tourist trap tendencies of its original Greek namesake to the south.
Korcula town itself is a walled medieval town rising straight up out of the clear blue waters of the Adriatic, with a herringbone pattern of narrow streets and alleys. Korcula produces some good wines, in particular “Grk” and “Posip”, and one of Croatia’s best red wine producing areas, dingac, lies on the nearby Peljesac peninsula.

The island of Vis is a pearl among Croatian Adriatic islands, left untouched by the development of tourism for so many years. Vis has always been an island of fishermen and winegrowers. Plitvice

Chiang Mai

Popularly known as the Rose of the North, Chiang Mai is blessed with stunning natural beauty and unique indigenous cultural identity. Founded by King Mengrai the Great as the capital of the Lanna Thai kingdom by merging the various city states in the region in 1296. Today Chiang Mai is the economic, communications, cultural and tourism centre of Northern Thailand.
About 700 kilometers from Bangkok, Chiang Mai is situated on the Mae Ping River basin some 310 meters above sea level. Surrounded by high mountain ranges, it covers an area of approximately 20,107 square kilometers. The terrain is mainly jungles and mountains, parts of which are within national parks which are still fertile and verdant with plentiful flora and fauna. There are many sites and locations where tourists prefer to visit to study the lifestyle of the tribal people who live on high hills.

Phuket

The largest island in Thailand and is a province in itself. Phuket is a beautiful island with many great beaches, rocky capes, mountains and forested hills as well as lush farmlands incorporating crops such as rubber, pineapple and tapioca. Phuket is also a central point from which travelers may discover alternative but equally exciting destinations.

Phi Phi Island

Phi Phi Island is Thailand’s island-superstar. For some, it’s the only reason to touchdown in Phuket. Even with all the hype, it doesn’t disappoint. Phi Phi’s beauty is a large chunk of the allure. The islands, when approached by boat, rise from the sea like a fortress. Sheer cliffs tower overhead, then give way to beach-fronted jungle.
Phi Phi is a group of six islands. The two main islands are Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. The larger and inhabited Phi Phi Don attracts hundreds of visitors to stay on its lovely shores while the smaller uninhabited Phi Phi Leh hosts stunningly beautiful bays and beaches, including the world-famous Maya Bay, which was the set where The Beach (with Leonardo Di Caprio) was filmed. Just a 45-minute speedboat trip or a 90-minute ferryboat ride from either Phuket or Krabi, these picture postcard islands offer the ultimate tropical getaway.

Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay lies between southern Thailand’s mainland and Phuket Island. Also known as Ao Phang Nga National Park, it’s characterized by limestone cliffs and rock formations, as well as mangrove forests and small islands. Among the islands are Koh Tapu, known as James Bond Island for its appearance in a Bond film. Koh Phanak Island is known for its caves and lagoons. The bay’s waters are dotted with coral reefs.

Koh Yao Noi

Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai are a pair of large islands in the middle of Phang Nga Bay, equidistant to Phuket and the Krabi mainland. While the pace of development is accelerating on Koh Yao Noi in particular, the islands remain a quiet refuge that feels far removed from the crowds of Phuket. It is a little slice of paradise that tends to attract a much smaller crowd than its neighbors. Koh Yao Noi (and neighboring Koh Yao Yai) is a relaxed, eco-minded island with far less tourism than the bustle of Phuket or the thumping party scene of Koh Phi Phi. It tends to cater to a higher end and sporty crowd and has maintained a peaceful elegance.

Chalet Venus, a cosy chalet apartment located in Zermatt and conveniently situated close to the Sunnegga Express base lift station which is a 2 minute walk away. This chalet is situated just a 4 minute walk from the shops and restaurants nearby.

Venus features a warm wood fireplace perfect for relaxing by the fire side with friends and family. The chalet also features a brand new kitchen ideal for cooking a delicious meal followed by after dinner drink on the terrace. The terrace is a great place to relax by day also with a stunning Matterhorn view.

Heidi is a first floor apartment located in Haus Bittel in the very heart of Zermatt. Comprising the entire first floor (128 m2) of a traditional, creaky, wooden, Swiss chalet, this is a delightful luxury chalet apartment which has just been refurbished: a real Zermatt gem sleeping up to 6 people. A great deal of attention has gone into enhancing its old alpine atmosphere while providing every modern convenience and a sense of cozy luxury. You will be cosseted by weathered wood paneling and local granite walls, an antique stone fire-stove (with a modern glass door), wooden ceiling beams (with spotlights), a unique dining table consisting of a traditional harrow under a glass top, a generously sized new and fully specified connecting kitchen, and much more.

There are three quaint bedrooms and three very modern bathrooms. Bedroom 1 (the largest) has a standard double bed and en-suite bathroom with shower and toilet. Bedroom 2 can be configured either as a double or as two singles. Its bathroom is next door, with shower and toilet. Bedroom 3 is the smallest, with a 160cm double bed, but it has the advantage of having the largest en-suite bathroom with corner-bath, rainfall shower and toilet. You should be aware that these two bedrooms are small; however their interior design is charming, giving one the feeling of snuggling down in a cozy mountain cabin.

The Zora Penthouse is a mirror image of the adjacent Zeus Penthouse. Situated in Haus Jaspis close to the main street and the Sunnegga Express base lift station, the very spacious (170m2) Zora Penthouse is on the top floor (with lift access) of a recent chalet with an unmatched view over the Zermatt village rooftops dominated by the Matterhorn. Day 1: Welcome to Switzerland / Montreux

“Bienvenue” in Switzerland – your cycling adventure in pure nature and along beautiful lakes starts at the shore of Lake Geneva.The town of Montreux nestles in a sheltered Lake Geneva bay, surrounded by vineyards and against the breathtaking backdrop of snow-covered Alps.
Because of the exceptionally mild climate Montreux is called the capital of the Vaud Riviera. Plants associated with the Mediterranean, such as pines, cypresses and palm trees grow here.
Charlie Chaplin, Freddie Mercury and several other famous people of world-renown lived and continue to live on the Vaud Riviera.

Day 2: Montreux – Gruyères [approx. 45km/28miles]

Your tour guide will meet you at your hotel reception. Short Briefing and short introduction ride on your e-Bike.
Leaving sparkling Lake Geneva behind your ride takes the old Cheese Route to Gruyères. This pretty village perched on its hill attracts thousands of tourists every year who all fall prey to its medieval charms.
Tip: Start this stretch taking the funicular from Vevey to Mount Pelerin followed by the panoramic trail to Chatel St. Denis.

Day 3: Gruyères – Boltigen [approx. 64km/40miles]

The clanking of cow bells will be your constant companion on this stretch.

Day 5: Iseltwald – Lucerne [approx. 59km/37miles]

The Brünig Pass is an exciting challenge for some, a steep obstacle for others. Just as long as you know that the cable car at Meiringen can whisk you up to Hasliberg and from there it is pretty much a downhill ride all the way – along Lake Lunern and Lake Sarnen to the shores of Lake Lucerne.
Lucerne, the gateway to central Switzerland, sited on Lake Lucerne, is embedded within an impressive mountainous panorama. Thanks to its attractions, its souvenir and watch shops, the beautiful lakeside setting and the nearby excursion mountains of the Rigi, Pilatus and Stanserhorn, the town is a destination for many travellers on their journey through central Switzerland.

Day 6: Lucerne – Unterägeri [approx. 45km/28miles]

Enjoy yourself in the morning. You surely want to stroll through Lucerne, enjoy the panoramic view from Mt. Rigi or Mt. Pilatus or take a boat ride and discover the beauties of the lake.
After lunch we start our todays tour. Lake Zug awaits with cherries in every variety and the Lake Aegeri lies embedded in a hilly morainal landscape.

Day 7: Unterägeri – Zurich [approx. 53km/33miles]

The Rothenthurm high moorland is a precious tract of open countryside. After the busy world of pilgrims in Einsiedeln is the most important place of pilgrimage dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Switzerland.
The high valley of Einsiedeln located in the heart of Central Switzerland is characterised by moors and Lake Sihl, the biggest reservoir in Switzerland in terms of area.
From Lake Sihl it’s down valley to the shores of Lake Zurich where we get to Pfäffikon from where we travel to Zurich – our final destination of our trip.

Enjoy your Zurich day. Have a stroll around the city of Zurich: visit the Old Town

The Swiss are a friendly and hospitable people who have always maintained and nurtured their own local customs, and because of this, Switzerland is a country with an enormous wealth of cultural activity and living tradition.
«La suisse n’existe pas» (Switzerland does not exist) – in this one key sentence Switzerland introduced itself at the World Exposition in Seville in 1992. This was because it is not uniformity, but a variety in a small space that defines Switzerland. In little Switzerland, four national languages are spoken in addition to numerous dialects.
Switzerland is home to a host of fascinating and famous legends like the story of William Tell.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON ACTIVITIES

Costa Rica is a very diverse country with many things to see. It is important to observe the recommendations of your guide to maximize your chances to observe wildlife. The environment in some areas is very fragile, please take extreme care and obey all postings and suggestions. Rafting provides some wonderful memories; we suggest the purchase of a disposable waterproof camera to use on these days. Extra clothing and gear can be left with the Rios Tropicales staff during rafting trip on the river. It is imperative that you remove all of your luggage from Best Western Irazu Hotel in San Jose. The Rios Tropicales Lodge in the jungle offers all of the linens you will need with the exception of towels, so please plan on bringing a towel during the rafting portion.

HELPFUL TRAVEL HINTS

Suggested gratuities: for the guide and staff $40 per participant, which should be given to the head guide for distribution at the end of the tour. It is customary to leave a gratuity for the housekeeping staff at the hotels, typically $1-2 per person each night. For the guides leading the canopy tours and other activities it is nice to leave a gratuity of $5-$10. Wait Staff $1 per meal. Van Drivers $1 per day, they keep our luggage safe while we are away. Vegetarian or other dietary requirements can be accommodated with advanced notice. Please contact Alpine Adventures with requests. COUNTRY

Costa Rica is a tranquil haven of democracy in Central America with no army, excellent hospitals, well-educated people, with a great respect for human rights. Ticos, as the Costa Ricans are known, are a friendly, helpful and tolerant people. A majority of Costa Rica’s residents speak at least some English and will try to help tourists. They favor moderation, and therefore have managed to avoid the political fanaticism of their neighbors. This small country, roughly the size of West Virginia, has an incredible diversity of flora and fauna. With much to see and do here, from the heights of active volcanoes to palm-fringed beaches, it is impossible to explore everything is just one week. Twelve percent of the land has been set aside as national reserves to protect the astonishing number of plants, birds, reptiles, insects and mammals. Ticos are proud of their country and all is has to offer and most willingly share their knowledge about the surrounding areas.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND MEALS

While in San Jose a comfortable, clean, and centrally located hotel is utilized. Each of the rooms has a private bathroom, telephone, and satellite television. There is a restaurant, bar, pool, and Internet access available. On the rafting expedition, the first and second night is spent camping in the hostel style rooms with bunk beds and shared bathroom bungalows. While staying in the bungalows you will share bathrooms and showering rooms with the other guests. This place provides a relaxing and authentic slumber environment. While staying in La Fortuna Arenal, the Volcano lodge itself is set within a tropical garden, watching over the fiery activity of the Arenal volcano and close to the thrills of a canopy adventure and the calm relaxation of some of the most beautiful hot springs in the world. Each room is tastefully decorated to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. Meals are casual and there is plenty of food to go around. Highlights of the meals are the fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms. Bottled water is available with every meal and at stops along the way. Special dietary needs can be accommodated only with advance notice.

DOCUMENTS AND CURRENCY

Currently only a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the dates of the trip and round-trip ticket are needed for entry into Costa Rica, a visa is not required for stays under 90 days. Immunizations are not required for entry; however we recommend that clients consult a physician for their own personal needs. The currency used in Costa Rica is the Colon; however in many large tourist areas it is also possible to use US dollars. It is best to use Colon to obtain the fairest exchange rates.Although there are ATM machines available in many areas they are not reliable and their use is not recommended. The ATMs primarily use Visa; bank ATMs will accept other types of cards. Do not rely solely on ATM transactions for cash; it is best to have a sufficient amount of traveler’s checks.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON ACTIVITIES

Costa Rica is a very diverse country with many things to see. It is important to observe the recommendations of your guide to maximize your chances to observe wildlife. The environment in some areas is very fragile, please take extreme care and obey all postings and suggestions. Rafting provides some wonderful memories; we suggest the purchase of a disposable waterproof camera to use on these days. Extra clothing and gear can be left with the Rios Tropicales staff during rafting trip on the river. It is imperative that you remove all of your luggage from Best Western Irazu Hotel in San Jose. The Rios Tropicales Lodge in the jungle offers all of the linens you will need with the exception of towels, so please plan on bringing a towel during the rafting portion.

HELPFUL TRAVEL HINTS

Suggested gratuities: for the guide and staff $40 per participant, which should be given to the head guide for distribution at the end of the tour. It is customary to leave a gratuity for the housekeeping staff at the hotels, typically $1-2 per person each night. For the guides leading the canopy tours and other activities it is nice to leave a gratuity of $5-$10. Wait Staff $1 per meal. Van Drivers $1 per day, they keep our luggage safe while we are away. Vegetarian or other dietary requirements can be accommodated with advanced notice. Please contact Alpine Adventures with requests. Current airport taxes are approximately $26 for international flights. You need to pay them at the San Jose airport at the day of return departure. The cash and credit cards are accepted.

SUGGESTED PACKING LIST

This tour requires clothing suitable for a variety of environments. Evenings may have cool temperatures. It is important to dress in layers and be willing to wear appropriate clothing. Be aware that this trip moves almost every night, you are responsible for keeping your luggage with you and making sure it gets from lodge to lodge. Laundry service is not available on many parts of this tour so pack enough additional clothing for the entire tour.

DAY 1: Kwandwe Private Game Reserve | Ecca Lodge

Kwandwe Private Game Reserve

A vast and pristine 22,000 hectare/ 54,000 acre wilderness extending along 30 km/ 19 miles of privately owned Great Fish River frontage in South Africa’s Eastern Cape region, Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is home to a diverse array of wildlife including the ‘Big Five’, as well as cheetah, hippo, springbok, giraffe and more. The soul-stirring beauty of the landscape lends its charm to all four of its modern, yet intimate Relais & Chateaux accredited lodges. The reserve is a delight to travellers young and old and provides superb game and bird viewing as well as providing habitat for protected species such as the Black Rhino, Blue Crane and Martial Eagle. Day Description

Guests arrive in Port Elizabeth and collect their vehicle from the Budget Kiosk and travel to Kwandwe Private Game Reserve where the fist two nights are enjoyed in a luxury lodge on a Big 5 private game reserve. On arrival at the reserve guests check in and then transported on an open safari vehicle to their lodge. Once guests have settled in they depart on their first evening wildlife safari and the return for an excellent dinner.

Overnight: Kwandwe Ecca Lodge

Ecca Lodge is a modern and trendy lodge, and the perfect base for the young at heart on safari. Set in thick vegetation overlooking a dense valley, Ecca Lodge’s 6 suites offer breathtaking views onto an escarpment of steep shale cliffs. Day Description

Guests enjoy a morning wildlife safari exploring this extremely diverse private game reserve. On returning to the lodge they enjoy breakfast with an option to do a short guided walk if arranged with their ranger. Light snacks and sweets are served at high tea before departure of the afternoon/evening wildlife safari, the safari returns after enjoying the search for the nocturnal species. Guests freshen up and then enjoy dinner.

DAY 3: St Francis Bay | Garden Route

With its great beaches along a narrow strip of fertile land nestled between majestic mountains and the big blue Indian Ocean the Garden Route is one of South Africa’s premier holiday destinations.

Day Description

The morning is again enjoyed out in the South African bush exploring and searching for the African fauna. Guests return to the lodge for breakfast before checking out. Once guests have checked out they will travel down the coast to the small fishing village of St Francis Bay. Guests check in at the luxury guest house The Sands in St Francis Bay. The rest of the day is enjoyed exploring this beautiful fishing village where a visit to a penguin sanctuary can be enjoyed or a deep sea fishing trip or an enjoyable sun downer boat trip along the St Francis canals. Guests can enjoy dinner at their own expense at one of the fantastic restaurants in the village.

DAY 5: Garden Route | Plettenberg Bay

Day Description

Guests enjoy a number of activities and attractions in this section of the Garden Route region.

Under a two-hectare dome, the world’s largest aviary, Birds of Eden, is a safe and natural free-flight environment for African birds and a selection of smaller animals. An indigenous forest and a mysterious ruin with walk-behind waterfall provide these graceful creatures and their visitors with amusement.

Monkey Land

The world’s first free-roaming multi-species primate shelter, Monkeyland makes for a great family outing and plays an important role in raising awareness about the plight and rehabilitation of endangered primate species.

Bloukrans Bungee Jump

If it’s adrenaline you’re after, look no further than the Bloukrans Bridge. At 216 meters high and with a 7-second free fall, Bloukrans is the world’s highest bungee jump. Your experience of the highest bridge in Africa doesn’t have to include a bungee jump, however, as you can also participate in a walking tour of the structure.

Robberg Peninsula

The sheltered waters that make Plettenberg Bay such an ecologically rich coastal area and a prime water sports destination owe much to the landmark rocky headland of the Robberg Peninsula. The peninsula is a beautiful wilderness area that is famed for its coastal walks, abundant marine and bird life, and amazing sea views.

Knysna Elephant Park

Many years before hunting, deforestation and development took their toll on the environment, the Knysna indigenous forests were home to free-roaming herds of elephant. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that you will meet one of these gentle giants in the forest, but today you can still enjoy their company at the Knysna Elephant Park.

Elephant Sanctuary, The Crags

DAY 6: Route 62 | Oudtshoorn

Route 62

Route 62 might market itself as the longest Wine Route in the world, but that’s definitely not all there is to it. Lush greenery and fertile valleys form a stark contrast against the semi-desert of the Klein Karoo while towering mountains and their rivers and streams provide an awe-inspiring backdrop throughout. Some of the renowned attractions visitors will spot as they follow the route are the winelands of the Breede River Valley, the majestic Swartberg mountains, the Cango Caves and ostrich farms of Oudtshoorn, and the fruit orchards of the Langkloof Valley.

Day Description

Guests depart Tsala Lodge after breakfast to arrive in Knysna in time to enjoy the Feathered Nature Reserve excursion. The guided excursion is finalized with a fantastic buffet lunch before returning to their vehicle to travel into the Karoo and check in at Rosenhof Guest House in Outdshoorn. Guests have time to enjoy a visit to the Cango Caves with these magnificent limestone formations and incredible interconnecting caves. On returning to Rosenhof guests freshen up and enjoy a fantastic dinner.

Rosenhof Country House is situated on the outskirts of Oudtshoorn en route to the Cango Caves and Ostrich farms. Day Description

Within the expansive Kapama Private Game Reserve, River Lodge epitomises five-star safari accommodation of South Africa. The majestic northern Drakensberg mountains form the backdrop to the 64-suite River Lodge, which is positioned along a bend of the seasonal Kapama River. It’s the largest luxury game lodge in the Greater Kruger National Park area and is stylishly furnished to ensure an unforgettable African safari experience.

River Lodge’s 40 spacious air-conditioned suites have uninterrupted views over the Big Five game reserve from private patios, and all feature full, en-suite bathrooms with lavish amenities replenished daily. The suites are decorated to reflect old Africa in a luxury game lodge setting. Beverage stations for early morning coffee in suite and minibars for sundowners on your private patio are standard in all rooms.

African artifacts adorn the lounges of River Lodge, and a palate of red and gold reflects the colors of Africa’s earth. Glass stack doors open onto the rim-flow pool to create an al fresco experience. The long, L-shaped lounge and bar, under double-volume thatch, follow the line of the pool to create an airy but cozy atmosphere. In winter, a double-sided fireplace provides additional warmth. Recliners under umbrellas beckon guests to enjoy shady relaxation around the pool, which is also a prime vantage point for game viewing. A small, permanent waterhole lies just beyond the perimeter of River Lodge and attracts various antelope species, elephant, and buffalo, so viewing the Big Five – cocktail in hand – is quite usual from here.

In true African luxury safari style, Kapama offers guests three different dining venues. As in classic old Africa, evening meals are often enjoyed seated around a roaring fire in the Rhino Boma. Here, buffet meals are served under open-sided thatch and showcase pan-African dishes prepared from fresh local ingredients. Traditional venison dishes also feature on this authentic African menu. Romantic dining is epitomised by dinner set in the dry riverbed in front of the lodge, under a star-studded African night sky. The experience adds enchantment to any African luxury safari experience. The Siyatla Lounge is purpose-built as an enclosed dining area, where breakfasts and lunches are served. It has its own bar and lounge with two large fireplaces, while glass stack doors open up the lounge to the surrounding bushveld.

All cuisine at Kapama is prepared using fresh seasonal ingredients and herbs grown in the lodge gardens. Traditional South African dishes and accompaniments, such as mealie pap (African-style polenta) and chakalaka (a hot, spicy relish) further enhance the luxury game lodge experience by giving a taste of real Africa. Menus include warthog stew, kudu casserole, impala sausages and oxtail curry. Vegetarians, vegans, and various other dietary requirements are easily catered for.

Kapama River Lodge boasts a magnificent wine cellar, stocked with the finest South African wines. Over 600 bottles are on hand, stored in a carefully temperature-controlled and humidified environment. With the exception of French champagne, all the wines and sparkling Méthode Cap Classiques are from choice South African vineyards. To keep in touch with the rest of the world, River Lodge Media Room has satellite television and a DVD player. The Media Room can also easily be transformed into an intimate conference room for 20 delegates. Guest Internet facilities are adjacent, should you wish to connect with family and friends back home. The rate is full board which includes all meals and 2 game drives daily. Beer, wine, and alcohol is available for an extra charge.

In true African luxury safari style, Kapama offers guests three different dining venues. As in classic old Africa, evening meals are often enjoyed seated around a roaring fire in the Rhino Boma. Here, buffet meals are served under open-sided thatch and showcase pan-African dishes prepared from fresh local ingredients. Traditional venison dishes also feature on this authentic African menu. Romantic dining is epitomised by dinner set in the dry riverbed in front of the lodge, under a star-studded African night sky. The experience adds enchantment to any African luxury safari experience. The Siyatla Lounge is purpose-built as an enclosed dining area, where breakfasts and lunches are served. It has its own bar and lounge with two large fireplaces, while glass stack doors open up the lounge to the surrounding bushveld.

All cuisine at Kapama is prepared using fresh seasonal ingredients and herbs grown in the lodge gardens. Traditional South African dishes and accompaniments, such as mealie pap (African-style polenta) and chakalaka (a hot, spicy relish) further enhance the luxury game lodge experience by giving a taste of real Africa. Menus include warthog stew, kudu casserole, impala sausages and oxtail curry. Vegetarians, vegans, and various other dietary requirements are easily catered for.

Kapama River Lodge boasts a magnificent wine cellar, stocked with the finest South African wines. Over 600 bottles are on hand, stored in a carefully temperature-controlled and humidified environment. With the exception of French champagne, all the wines and sparkling Méthode Cap Classiques are from choice South African vineyards. Set in a majestic mountain landscape in Engelberg, this Art Nouveau hotel was built in 1903. It offers a 24-hour reception, free WiFi in the entire hotel, as well as free parking.

As an example, a getaway for a family of four in Whistler might include five nights in a 1,100-square-foot suite at the Four Seasons, with four days of lift tickets and ski rentals, and round-trip transfers from Vancouver Airport. “We don’t recommend car rentals,” says Alpine president Rick Reichsfeld. “The airport companies don’t provide snow tires, and you don’t need a car in the village.”

At the risk of rousing the Nutrition Police, I’d like to advocate for a steady diet of pizza and french fries. It’s a binge program – let’s call it the Peak Plan – one that’s best administered in multiday bursts. And when introduced at an early age, it results in increased coordination, enhanced confidence, and lifelong family fun.

Five out of five Whistler Blackcomb ski school instructors agree – or so I learned after dropping my daughter off for her first time on skis and hearing their code words to form snowplows (Pizza!) and parallel skis (French fries!). “See you at the end of the day,” one said, waving my wife and me off as a handful of puffballs weeble-wobbled around him. Though it was hard to picture the bunny-slope buffet ending in anything but an unsightly mash, who could argue? The previous night had brought a fresh dusting of snow, and skiers with more advanced palates were carving arcs like strands of angel-hair pasta high above.

Rising from the Coast Mountains about 75 miles north of Vancouver, Whistler sits directly in British Columbia’s winter storm track and averages 450-plus inches of snow per season – not the fluffiest powder, but nearly five feet more than the big Colorado resorts. Sizewise, the two-mountain behemoth bests its closest North American peer, Utah’s recently merged Park City/Canyons Resort, by almost 900 acres. Whistler earned fame with seasoned skiers and snowboarders drawn to its exposed faces, free-skiing terrain, and some of the more thrilling intermediate runs around. (Peel down big-mountain-style “Saddle,” and, once the butterflies settle, tell me you don’t agree.) But since hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics, the resort has focused on its family appeal, with expanded beginner and family ski areas and terrain parks for skill levels ranging from “just learning to jump” to “now seeking sponsorships” – some lift etiquette signs even read “Please Don’t Curse in Line.”…

A STRONG DOLLAR and a host of new hotels are driving interest in Europe this ski season, but there’s plenty to do stateside as well.
“We’ve definitely been seeing a rise in international bookings,” says Richelle Blanken, vice president of Alpine Adventures. “The dollar is strong against the Euro and the Swiss Franc, so we’ve had a lot of inquiries for Europe.”
Millennial travelers, too, are increasingly taking ski vacations in Europe as the strong dollar has led to lowers costs, says Blanken.
“If they’re on the East Coast near a major airport, they can fly over in winter for about the same price as Colorado or Utah,” explains Blanken. “A lot of Millennials haven’t gone to Europe, so they can stay a couple of extra nights in a gateway city — we’re definitely seeing a rise in that.”
For clients traveling with their family, Blanken recommends booking early, particularly for popular holiday periods like Christmas and New Year. Another good tip for families is to consider a private home rental. “For example, we can do a six-bed-room ski-in / ski-out house in Deer Valley or Park City, Utah, and if people don’t want to deal with cleaning or cooking, we can hire a private chef for one to three meals a day,” says Blanken. “It ends up being more affordable than doing rooms at a five-star hotel, and it gives everyone a lot of space.”

New Hotels on the Horizon

Guests headed to Europe this season will have their pick of a host of new and freshly renovated hotels. This December, for example, the new Hotel Barriere Les Neiges is set to make its debut in Courchevel. The luxury property will have 42 guestrooms and suites, some with connecting doors for families, as well as direct access to the Courchevel ski area. All suites come with butler service. For dining, guests can check out the Le Fouquet brasserie, as well as a south-facing outdoor terrace and lounge. Other amenities include a cinema room and the Spa Diane Barriere, which offers an aquatic circuit, swimming pool, hammam, sauna, outdoor Jacuzzi, fitness center and seven treatment rooms with a treatment menu developed specifically for winter sports.
In Val Thorens, the new Hotel Pashmina offers ski-in / ski-out access from its 50 rooms and suites as well as concierge service, according to Dan Sherman, vice president of marketing for Ski.com. Chef Romuald Fassenet, winner of the Meilleur Ouvrier de France prize, leads the property’s two restaurants.The bar has a unique design with chairlift benches and a dining alcove in the shape of a cable car. For another offbeat experience, there is an igloo on site in which guests can spend the night. Another added incentive is an on-site spa offering wellness and beauty treatments by L’Occitane.
Also at Val Thorens, Fahrenheit 7 has renovated all 107 of its guestrooms and suites in a design that’s meant to be modern yet cozy.There are four restaurants on the property: Seven, for breakfast; the Terrace, for lunch; and La Rotisserie or Le Zinc for dinner. La Rotisserie serves a variety of roasted meats, fish and other dishes, as well as kid-friendly options, while Le Zinc specializes in fondues and other local dishes, sometimes with live music.
Val d’Isere is getting two new hotels this season: La Mourra Hotel Village and Chalet Skadi. La Mourra is a series of luxury private chalets, a restaurant and a lounge bar arranged in a mountain hamlet at the entrance of the old vil-lage and a short walk from the center village, which has a variety of shops and restaurants.The property is held by the same family from the famous Hotel Le Blizzard, says Sherman.
Chalet Skadi is a new four- to 10-person unit opening December 17. In addition to chalet-style services, guests also get access to the Les Bains du Montana spa, which has an indoor swimming pool, sauna and hammam, as well as beauty treatments by 5 Mondes.
Club Med, which has 20 all-inclusive ski resorts in the Alps and beyond, is offering an all-new Ski Expert program for graduates of the Club Med Expert Agents program. Eye on the U.S.

Meanwhile, major resorts across in the Rocky Mountains are also rolling out new hotels and slope side upgrades.
The new Limelight Hotel Ketchum is on track for a December opening. When complete, the hotel will have 99 rooms, 14 condos for sale with 12 lock-off units and a new restaurant and lobby lounge. Modeled after Lime-light’s existing Aspen hotel, the new property will be close to downtown shops and restaurants and the Sun Valley River Run base area. Guests can also enjoy expanded continental breakfast, apres ski deals in the lobby lounge and pet-friendly rooms.
Speaking of apres, this season will also see the winter debut of the new LBC Apres, located mid-mountain on Snowmass in the Lynn Britt Cabin, serving $6 gin and juice cocktails and apres food specials starting at $5.The Cabin also has DJ entertainment, a fire pit and outdoor lounge seating.
In Vail, the ski-in / ski-out Vail Cascade Resort and Spa will reopen as a newly minted member of The Luxury
Collection following a $35 million renovation that included a complete redesign of guestrooms and amenities, such as a new fine-dining concept, a lounge with live music overlooking Gore Creek, and a gourmet market and cafe. Destination Hotels will continue to manage and operate the property.
The Arrabelle at Vail Square, A Rock-Resort is also fresh off the June debut of its own renovations, which included updates to soft seating and carpeting in all 36 hotel rooms.The project also entailed a full revamping of the hotel’s workout facility along with addition of new and expanded cardio equipment, HD TV integration, high impact flooring, a separate core / stretch zone and a new hydrotherapy facial machine at the Rock Resorts Spa.
In Utah, Park City Mountain Resort is fresh off its 2015 debut as the largest ski and snowboard resort in the United States after a $50 million capital improvement project connected the former Park City and Canyons Resorts. This year, Park City will begin its season on November 18, with Canyons following suit the day before Thanksgiving — both earlier than their traditional opening dates. Snowbird is set to open its newly renovated and expanded Creekside Lodge at the beginning of the 2016-2017 season, nearly doubling the size of the existing building and adding new dining and ticketing options.

Spring Skiing in the Mountains

The season that has it all

Is it too early to start thinking about spring skiing? I think that with parts of the country plunged into the frigid depths of winter, now is actually the perfect time to daydream about the mountains in one of the most underrated seasons. Spring skiing is a not so well-kept secret among avid skiers and riders.

The days start to lengthen, leading to extended operating hours for the lifts and more time to make those extra turns. The weather has a tendency to waver between bluebird days and the skies opening up and dropping copious amounts of snow. You can have one day where you’ll see people skiing in t-shirts working on their goggle tans, and the next they’ll be getting fresh tracks in waist deep powder.

Spring in the mountains is about what happens off the slopes as much as on.

There’s nothing better than getting face shots on a powder day, except maybe by wrapping it up with après ski outdoors, basking in the sun and recapping your runs with friends. With the warmer weather also comes spring concerts, and catching a free show with the mountains in the background is a definite must-do this time of year. If you plan right, you can make it to the resort when they have pond skimming, when the adventurous don their best onesie or most creative costume, and attempt to ski or ride across a pond. It’s not always successful, but it is always entertaining.

Now, I have to ask…is it really too early to think about spring skiing?

My Best Days on the Mountain

The word ‘epic’ gets thrown around a lot these days. It gets attached to ordinary, day-to-day things, which is remarkably far from epic. My use of epic is generally mountain related, although I still probably say it a lot more than I should.

Epic was the day I made it to Vail right before the pass closed because of the weather. This same storm dropped a foot of powder that I got to ski for a couple of hours before the pass opened and it got tracked out.
It was epic in Steamboat after they had gone a couple of weeks with very little new snow, only to have three feet come down in one night.

I’ve actually lost count of how many epic days I had when living in Utah; I got to the point where I required at least six inches of fresh snow to motivate me out of bed in the morning.

We offer a couple of days skiing with instructors to familiarize yourself with the mountain, and then if you want to explore on your own, go for it! Our groups are led by Leo Demelbauer, PSIA level 3 ski instructor and Alpine team member. He knows the mountains like the back of his hand, and his love of skiing is infectious.

I don’t want to discount non-powder days…some of my most memorable times have been with my Alpine family skiing in the sun, making some leisurely runs before heading to après or taking a wander through the village.

Skiing Val d’Isere, before finishing up at La Folie Douce, surrounded by hundreds of revelers–many of whom were dressed in full costume –is one I will not forget anytime soon. Everyone dancing in their ski boots at Mooserwirt in St Anton, while watching people attempt to ski the run to the bottom was yet another amazing day.

When it comes down to it, whether you’re skiing freshies right after a storm, groomers on a bluebird day, or even just taking a couple of laps with friends and heading to après and absorbing the mountain atmosphere, shouldn’t any time you get to spend on the mountain be considered epic?

Winter is Coming

Ah, November. The month when Mother Nature can’t decide if it’s a balmy fall day in the 70s, or the heart of winter. November is when one by one, the resorts finally start opening for the skiers and snowboarders who have been eagerly waiting those first turns.

It’s a month when weather reports are obsessed over, and everyone becomes an amateur meteorologist. The Farmer’s Almanac becomes a staple in conversations, and a source of elation or despair, depending on its snow predictions for the upcoming season.

November didn’t get off to a roaring start in Colorado. While there was a picturesque dusting on the Rocky Mountains from previous snow, it wasn’t enough to give people visions of powder days in the immediate future. Resorts have been making snow, and there will be plenty of runs open to get some nice early season cruising in, but no one had expectations of needing their powder skis on opening day. After this most recent storm, however, attitudes have changed a bit. The excitement in the air is palpable, as snow reports get totaled, and the realization sinks in that it is about time to start bringing out the equipment and planning weekends around weather systems. Resorts in Colorado received up to 13 inches of snow in this last storm, and it is officially time to get stoked.

Winter is coming. And so are the powder days.

Skiing in Europe isn’t just about clicking into your skis and schussing down some of the most famous slopes in the world. It’s part of an experience that can check every box of a dream trip.

Dancing the afternoon away on a sunny deck in ski boots during après ski, glühwein flowing and music bumping. Staying in a hotel that has been owned by one family for generations, and feeling like one of their long- lost relatives by the time you leave. One of the most underrated times of year to hit the slopes is nearly upon us: early season in the ski resorts. These are the few precious weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas where you can find the amazing combination of uncrowded slopes and killer deals. Resorts will be starting to gear up for the holiday crowds, but the only people you will be sharing the slopes with prior to the holidays are locals and some in-the-know tourists looking to get their first turns of the year.

Since the properties aren’t as busy, you can score some unbelievable bargains coming to the mountains before Christmas. Anything from budget hotels and condos to the luxury resorts not only offer rates that are a fraction of the price you’ll find later in the year, but many of them will throw in a free night or additional discount to really sweeten the deal.

If you’ve never been skiing before because you think it’s too expensive, December beckons. Everything from lodging and lift tickets to ski rentals drop in price, and make that winter wonderland for you and your family within reach. There is no better way to prepare for winter than to spend your days surrounded by snow, and your nights curled up by a fireplace, hot drink in hand.

For those that love the five star experience, but would rather spend their money on living the dream with spa treatments, fine dining, and the famous mountain nightlife than all on lodging, the early season lets you have it all. Stay in a high end hotel where the service levels and ski access mean that the hardest thing you’ll have to do is decide where to après.
