Itinerary

Saturday: Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Sunday: At Sea

Monday: Rhodes, Greece

Tuesday: Bodrum, Turkey

Wednesday: Dalyan River, Turkey

Thursday: Santorini, Greece

Friday: Hydra, Greece

Saturday: Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

Athens

Athens is the historical capital of Europe, and the birthplace of democracy, arts, science and philosophy of western civilization. Home of Plato, Socrates, Pericles, Euripides, Sophocles, Aeschylus. Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities. It’s recorded history spanning around 3.400 years and it is being inhabited since the 11th millennium B.C. E. Today, under the shadow of Parthenon, the contemporary urban scenery of the sprawling city reflects its exciting history, and its multi- cultural modern personality.

Rhodes

Rhodes has a long and impressive history; it’s a place where the strong medieval aspect blends with the traditional Greek one. It is also an island with great natural beauty: the lovely beaches face the pine woods on the mountainsides; the mountain villages overlook the seaside towns; and the archaeological sites, the medieval monuments, and the cosmopolitan resorts arranged in the traditional style all conspire to make the popularity of this destination so hard to resist, even to a demanding traveler.

Bodrum

Turkey’s top resort, Bodrum, is more than the town of that name. The Bodrum Peninsula, extending west into the Aegean and bordering the Mediterranean, actually has a dozen resort towns and villages along its shores, of which famous Bodrum is but one. Each has its own beaches, hotels and other pleasures. Although Bodrum was Turkey’s original south Aegean seaside resort, and has the richest history on the peninsula with its crusader castle and Mausoleum, other villages—now grown to towns—are becoming almost as well-known.

The Dalyan

The Dalyan is part of the Turkish Riviera, some of the most beautiful coastal territory in the Mediterranean. Most famous for the breeding ground of the endangered loggerhead sea turtle at Itzuzu Beach, the shores of the Dalyan River provide access to several of Turkey’s historical sites. Near the fishing town of Dalyan visitors may find the ancient Carian city of Kaunos, while travelers on the river, navigating through the dense reeds, may view the Lycian tombs, carved directly into the cliffs over the river.

Santorini

Santorini, known since ancient times as Thira, is one of the most famous islands in the world. The fact that you can sit in front of the caldera, enjoy local dishes, a drink or a coffee while gazing at the remarkable beauty of an active volcano is priceless! The island is actually a group of islands consisting of Thira, Thirassia, Aspronissi, Palea and Nea Kameni in the southernmost part of the Cyclades.

Hydra

Hydra is a popular sailing destination. A rich naval tradition and a cosmopolitan island ambience are the defining characteristics of Hydra – a popular island in the Argosaronic Gulf – which attracts every year many personalities and jet-setters from Greece and abroad. This was the favourite destination and place of residence of painter Nikos Hatzikyriakos-Ghika, Leonard Cohen, and Henry Miller. It is also the birthplace of painter Panagiotis Tetsis, and of many other famous artists, writers etc. The island’s great beauty was appreciated also by celebrities such as Maria Callas, Pablo Picasso, and Sophia Loren.

Antarctica Express Air-Cruise

Antarctica
Your journey begins in Ushuaia, Argentina, at the pier. Board your ship in the afternoon and sail along the Beagle Channel towards Puerto Williams, Chile, the southernmost town in the world. Explore the surroundings before setting sail to Cape Horn.

After an overnight crossing of Nassau Bay, you awake in full view of legendary Cape Horn! Weather permitting, board a Zodiac, and be one of the few privileged adventurers to step foot on this famous and rarely visited island. Back on board, set sail towards Antarctica and cross the famous passage named in honor of Sir Francis Drake, the great 16th-century British explorer.

As you sail through the Drake Passage en route to King George Island, in the South Shetland Islands, attend an engaging program of lectures and presentations. In the company of expert guides, watch for wildlife from the lounge or from the outside decks. You may spot magnificent seabirds, such as albatrosses and petrels, as well as different species of whales on their way south to Antarctica.

Antarctica
After crossing the Antarctic Convergence, the environment changes noticeably. Keep your camera ready, as this is the time to watch for the first icebergs and the first sight of Antarctic land. Reaching the South Shetland Islands, sail in ice-filled bays while enjoying the company of seabirds, penguins, seals, and whales. Board a Zodiac for your first memorable shore visit to a penguin colony. Taking advantage of the endless Antarctic daylight, exploration will continue well into the evening.

Upon reaching King George Island, disembark at Fildes Bay. A 2-km (1.25-mi) walk takes you through Chile’s Frei Station and Russia’s Bellingshausen Station to the aircraft. Bid farewell to Antarctica as you board the flight back to Punta Arenas. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel for the night. (Note: Meals in Punta Arenas are at your leisure and not included in the program).

After breakfast, transfer to the Punta Arenas airport for your onward flight.

The January 2-8, 2021 (HEB06-AE) departure on board Hebridean Sky is a day longer and operates in reverse, with start in Punta Arenas and end in Ushuaia. An itinerary description is available on request.

Antarctica cruise
Sailing north, we hope to stop at Elephant Island. It was here that the crew of Shackleton’s Endurance found refuge while he and five handpicked men carried on to South Georgia. While stormy conditions rarely allow a shore landing, you will see the island from the ship.

As we sail northward, our historian and our naturalists offer a series of presentations. There is time to socialize in the ship’s lounge while keeping an eye out for the region’s birdlife.

The island of South Georgia is a diverse landscape of majestic mountains, massive glaciers, grassy uplands, and deep fjords. Visit the former whaling outpost of Grytviken, where you may pay your respects at the simple grave of Ernest Shackleton. At St. Andrew’s Bay be overwhelmed by the sight of 150,000 king penguins. At Cooper Island, the nesting home of thousands of black-browed albatrosses, see a large colony of macaroni penguins. If the weather is favorable, visits are also planned at Fortuna Bay, Salisbury Plains, Prion Island, and Elsehul Bay.

Ocean Nova
As the ship heads to South America, the program of presentations continues. Use this time to enhance your understanding of the region and its history.

Antarctica
Approach South America and sail along the Beagle Channel. Take in the beauty of Tierra del Fuego and Navarino Island as you head to Ushuaia.

Arrival to Ushuaia, where your journey ends at the pier upon disembarkation.

Note: The February 25-March 12, 2021 (MAG23-AS) departure operates in reverse, with start in Punta Arenas and end in Ushuaia. An itinerary description is available on request.

Welcome to paradise, welcome to Key West

If viewed from afar, Key West seems to float amid a large expanse of sky and sea.

An MSC Cruise will take you right to the southernmost point of the United States, in the Sunshine State, a land of sun-seekers and wild beaches. About 150 km from Cuba, an MSC cruise in the Caribbean and the Antilles is an opportunity to admire the crystal clear waters surrounding Key West, a strip of land just a few kilometers from Miami. The Spaniards nicknamed it “Island of Bones” because here the indigenous people buried their deceased love ones. Connected to the mainland by bridges, Key West is literally a paradise that offers a breathtaking panorama and stages an ancient culture and history. Enjoy the sunset at Mallory Square and get lost in Duval street, one of the liveliest streets of the city, with shops, clubs, and restaurants, and you won’t ever want to leave. It is no coincidence that the likes of Harry S. Truman, Tennessee Williams, and Ernest Hemingway decided to reside here.

Don’t miss the chance to visit the residence of Hemingway himself: An MSC excursion will take you inside the villa, now a museum, where the writer lived for about ten years. A dive into his life: the paintings, the typewriter, the kitchen and every corner that the writer shared with his second wife Pauline Pfeiffer. During his stay in Key West, Hemingway wrote his novel The Old Man and the Sea, winner of a Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize.

When in Key West, a visit to the sea is a must. With an MSC excursion, it is possible to see its depths, from the comfort of a glass-bottomed boat, built to admire the different varieties of colorful fish that populate the Atlantic Ocean.

The land of the swallows

A forty-kilometer-long island directly off the coast from Playa del Carmen, Isla Cozumel is a renowned cruise-ship call: nearly every day, up to ten cruise ships dock at one of the island’s three dedicated piers, all just south of the only town, San Miguel.

A holiday to Mexico with MSC Cruises will present you with restaurants, souvenir shops, and jewelry stores, all along the malecón (Av Rafael Melgar) in downtown San Miguel.

If you fancy a museum, the attractive Museo de la Isla de Cozumel has small displays of the flora, fauna and marine life of the island, as well as a good collection of Maya artifacts and old photos.

If you’re not a diver, there’s a certain appeal in wandering the relaxed inland blocks of San Miguel, away from the piers, spotting Maya ruins and birds (the Maya called the island cuzamil – “land of the swallows”) in the dense forests and being the only person on the windswept eastern beaches.

Midway across the island, San Gervasio is the only excavated Maya site on Cozumel. With several small temples connected by sacbeob, or long white roads, it was one of the many independent city-states that survived the fall of Chichén Itzá, flourishing between 1200 AD and 1650 AD. As part of a larger nature reserve, the site is worth a visit for the numerous birds and butterflies you can spot early in the morning or late in the day.

Progreso, Mexico

Mayan architecture along stunning beaches

Without a doubt, Progreso is a city that can satisfy your desire for the beach. Docking with your MSC cruise at the Caribbean and the Antilles, you will see a long and spacious coast, surrounded by the longest pier in Mexico, 4 miles, where you can find peace in a relaxed atmosphere.

Built in the nineteenth century as a seaport of Mérida, Progreso is located in the north-central part of Yucatàn overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. It is purely a maritime city and a very important industrial centre, around which, only a short distance away, there are numerous archaeological sites dating back to the Mayan culture.

To explore this city’s history, an MSC excursion will take you to Chichén-Itzà, an important Mayan archaeological site which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site includes numerous buildings; what catches the most attention is the temple of Kukulkan, a stepped pyramid from the pre-Columbian era with stairways running along the four sides. The Temple of the Warriors is also very stunning; it consists of a large stepped pyramid with rows of carved columns, depicting warriors on the front and sides. Chichén-Itzà is characterized by the seven ball game fields. In particular the biggest one is adorned by bas-reliefs.

Island Hopping Cruise 2019

Overlooking the calm blue waters of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik is one of the world’s most magnificent walled cities. Now a UNESCO world heritage site and Croatia’s most popular destination, it was once the capital of the maritime republic, The Republic of Ragusa (1358-1808).
The city walls, mostly a double line, have been a source of pride for Dubrovnik since the 16th century. Along its course and within its walls lie several towers and fortresses, as well as numerous historic monuments. And beyond the walls, many villas surrounded by pretty gardens. The Stradun, or main street features beautiful late-Renaissance houses on each side. Except for the Stradun, the old city is a maze of picturesque, steep, narrow streets that twist and turn.

It is Croatia’s greenest island with its Mediterranean vegetation, clear and clean sea, gentle sandy shoreline and a wealth of underwater sea life. The island is considered to be one of the most beautiful of the Croatian islands. Half Mljet island is a pristine national park. There are few residents, no large towns and only one major road. Mljet is well known for its white and red wine, olives and goat cheese. It is indeed a unspoilt island covered by a dense Mediterranean forest. The sea is rich in fish and marine life.

Korcula is best known as the birthplace of Marco Polo. The island is a little further away to get to so you have fewer crowds and can enjoy the island more! So lush with dark pine forests, vineyards and olive groves the ancient Greek settlers called it Korkyra Melaina (‘Black Corfu’), Korcula has managed to avoid the tourist trap tendencies of its original Greek namesake to the south.
Korcula town itself is a walled medieval town rising straight up out of the clear blue waters of the Adriatic, with a herringbone pattern of narrow streets and alleys. Korcula produces some good wines, in particular “Grk” and “Posip”, and one of Croatia’s best red wine producing areas, dingac, lies on the nearby Peljesac peninsula.

The island of Vis is a pearl among Croatian Adriatic islands, left untouched by the development of tourism for so many years. Vis has always been an island of fishermen and winegrowers. Komiza on the island of Vis is considered the cradle of fishing in the Adriatic, and in times gone by, the Komiza fishermen where well known in all Mediterranean harbours as experts in their field.

Hvar, a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, is best known as a summer resort. Highlights of the port town Hvar include its 13th-century walls, a hilltop fortress and a main square anchored by the Renaissance-era Hvar Cathedral. The island also features beaches such as Dubovica and inland lavender fields. Boat excursions serve the nearby Pakleni Islands, which have secluded beaches and coves. Hvar Island is known for its excellent climate. It enjoys no fewer than 2,800+ hours of sunshine each year. With warm summers and mild winters, rich culture, beautiful views overlooking the Adriatic Sea, it’s no wonder that Hvar Island attracts so many visitors.
hvar croatia

Brac provides an excellent window into authentic island life, particularly in the interior. It has been inhabited since Neolithic times and has an extensive and fascinating history.
Bol is a small village that hosts a big, beautiful beach: Zlatni Rat. It is perhaps the best known and the most beautiful beach in Croatia.

With the rugged dalmatian mountains as a backdrop and the blue Adriatic Sea lapping its shores, Split is emerging as one of the must-see cities of Europe.
Come for the scenery and fall in love with the people who know how beautiful their city is and are proud to show it off.
It’s a magnificent blend of antiquity and modernity, with the relics of its time as part of the Roman Empire celebrated as much as the al fresco wining and dining that tourists expect.
split croatia

With cascading waterfalls hidden among lush forest greenery, it’s easy to see why Croatia’s very own Garden of Eden regularly features in lists of the world’s most beautiful places. At the heart of the Plitvice Lakes National Park, 16 azure pools spill into each other, connected with rocky outcrops dripping in moss. A boardwalk curves sinuously between lakes, allowing visitors to drink in the arresting beauty of the Plitvice Lakes at very close quarters.
The Plitvice Lakes area has been a site of continuous human settlement since prehistory, and today, locals still inhabit small settlements scattered around the park.
Given the long human history of the area, myths and legends have, over time, sprung from each of the 16 lakes. One of the most popular myths is the tale of an ancient, magic queen who was responsible for the creation of the lakes.

Thailand’s capital is south-east Asia’s most enigmatic city, a head-on clash between tradition and modernity – an urban cornucopia of smells, tastes, sounds and sights that one is unlikely to forget. Created as the Thai capital in 1782 by the first monarch of the present Chakri dynasty, Bangkok is a national treasure house and Thailand’s spiritual, cultural, political, commercial, educational and diplomatic center. More than anywhere else in the country, Bangkok expresses Thailand’s uncanny ability to blend the old with the new. This lends a thrilling sense of discovery to one’s sightseeing and adds an element of surprise when exploring what is the Orient’s most fabled city. Ultimately it is from the people that Bangkok derives its unique flavor. Fun-loving and easy going, they possess a rare tolerance which imbues the city with a real sense of freedom.

Popularly known as the Rose of the North, Chiang Mai is blessed with stunning natural beauty and unique indigenous cultural identity. Founded by King Mengrai the Great as the capital of the Lanna Thai kingdom by merging the various city states in the region in 1296. Today Chiang Mai is the economic, communications, cultural and tourism centre of Northern Thailand.
About 700 kilometers from Bangkok, Chiang Mai is situated on the Mae Ping River basin some 310 meters above sea level. Surrounded by high mountain ranges, it covers an area of approximately 20,107 square kilometers. The terrain is mainly jungles and mountains, parts of which are within national parks which are still fertile and verdant with plentiful flora and fauna. There are many sites and locations where tourists prefer to visit to study the lifestyle of the tribal people who live on high hills.

The largest island in Thailand and is a province in itself. Phuket is a beautiful island with many great beaches, rocky capes, mountains and forested hills as well as lush farmlands incorporating crops such as rubber, pineapple and tapioca. Phuket is also a central point from which travelers may discover alternative but equally exciting destinations.
Phuket has a major International airport, hotels of all categories, excellent infrastructure, established international standard restaurants, small local eateries, shopping centers, excellent nightlife, marina, movie cinema and a wide choice of recreation activities.

Phi Phi Island is Thailand’s island-superstar. For some, it’s the only reason to touchdown in Phuket. Even with all the hype, it doesn’t disappoint. Phi Phi’s beauty is a large chunk of the allure. The islands, when approached by boat, rise from the sea like a fortress. Sheer cliffs tower overhead, then give way to beach-fronted jungle.
Phi Phi is a group of six islands. The two main islands are Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. The larger and inhabited Phi Phi Don attracts hundreds of visitors to stay on its lovely shores while the smaller uninhabited Phi Phi Leh hosts stunningly beautiful bays and beaches, including the world-famous Maya Bay, which was the set where The Beach (with Leonardo Di Caprio) was filmed. Just a 45-minute speedboat trip or a 90-minute ferryboat ride from either Phuket or Krabi, these picture postcard islands offer the ultimate tropical getaway.

Phang Nga Bay lies between southern Thailand’s mainland and Phuket Island. Also known as Ao Phang Nga National Park, it’s characterized by limestone cliffs and rock formations, as well as mangrove forests and small islands. Among the islands are Koh Tapu, known as James Bond Island for its appearance in a Bond film. Koh Phanak Island is known for its caves and lagoons. The bay’s waters are dotted with coral reefs.

Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai are a pair of large islands in the middle of Phang Nga Bay, equidistant to Phuket and the Krabi mainland. While the pace of development is accelerating on Koh Yao Noi in particular, the islands remain a quiet refuge that feels far removed from the crowds of Phuket. It is a little slice of paradise that tends to attract a much smaller crowd than its neighbors. Koh Yao Noi (and neighboring Koh Yao Yai) is a relaxed, eco-minded island with far less tourism than the bustle of Phuket or the thumping party scene of Koh Phi Phi. It tends to cater to a higher end and sporty crowd and has maintained a peaceful elegance.

Edinburgh is not only one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, it is a city with a fantastic position. The view falls on all sides – green hills, the hint of the blue sea, the silhouettes of the buildings and the red cliffs. Check-In: Kapama Private Game Reserve, River Lodge

Check-InCheck-Out
Fri, Jun 15, 2018Mon, Jun 18, 2018
2:00 PM11:00 AM

Within the expansive Kapama Private Game Reserve, River Lodge epitomises five-star safari accommodation of South Africa. The majestic northern Drakensberg mountains form the backdrop to the 64-suite River Lodge, which is positioned along a bend of the seasonal Kapama River. It’s the largest luxury game lodge in the Greater Kruger National Park area and is stylishly furnished to ensure an unforgettable African safari experience.

River Lodge’s 40 spacious air-conditioned suites have uninterrupted views over the Big Five game reserve from private patios, and all feature full, en-suite bathrooms with lavish amenities replenished daily. The suites are decorated to reflect old Africa in a luxury game lodge setting. Beverage stations for early morning coffee in suite and minibars for sundowners on your private patio are standard in all rooms.

African artifacts adorn the lounges of River Lodge, and a palate of red and gold reflects the colors of Africa’s earth. Glass stack doors open onto the rim-flow pool to create an al fresco experience. The long, L-shaped lounge and bar, under double-volume thatch, follow the line of the pool to create an airy but cozy atmosphere. In winter, a double-sided fireplace provides additional warmth. Recliners under umbrellas beckon guests to enjoy shady relaxation around the pool, which is also a prime vantage point for game viewing. A small, permanent waterhole lies just beyond the perimeter of River Lodge and attracts various antelope species, elephant, and buffalo, so viewing the Big Five – cocktail in hand – is quite usual from here.

In true African luxury safari style, Kapama offers guests three different dining venues. As in classic old Africa, evening meals are often enjoyed seated around a roaring fire in the Rhino Boma. Here, buffet meals are served under open-sided thatch and showcase pan-African dishes prepared from fresh local ingredients. Traditional venison dishes also feature on this authentic African menu. Romantic dining is epitomised by dinner set in the dry riverbed in front of the lodge, under a star-studded African night sky. The experience adds enchantment to any African luxury safari experience. The Siyatla Lounge is purpose-built as an enclosed dining area, where breakfasts and lunches are served. It has its own bar and lounge with two large fireplaces, while glass stack doors open up the lounge to the surrounding bushveld.

All cuisine at Kapama is prepared using fresh seasonal ingredients and herbs grown in the lodge gardens. Traditional South African dishes and accompaniments, such as mealie pap (African-style polenta) and chakalaka (a hot, spicy relish) further enhance the luxury game lodge experience by giving a taste of real Africa. Menus include warthog stew, kudu casserole, impala sausages and oxtail curry. Vegetarians, vegans, and various other dietary requirements are easily catered for.

Kapama River Lodge boasts a magnificent wine cellar, stocked with the finest South African wines. Over 600 bottles are on hand, stored in a carefully temperature-controlled and humidified environment. With the exception of French champagne, all the wines and sparkling Méthode Cap Classiques are from choice South African vineyards. To keep in touch with the rest of the world, River Lodge Media Room has satellite television and a DVD player. The Media Room can also easily be transformed into an intimate conference room for 20 delegates. Guest Internet facilities are adjacent, should you wish to connect with family and friends back home. The rate is full board which includes all meals and 2 game drives daily. Beer, wine, and alcohol is available for an extra charge.

Sedona, Arizona 2018

Description:

Start with scenery that makes your heart leap. Sedona nestles among a geological wonderland. Multi-hued stone formations jut upwards from the high desert floor creating a vivid, mesmerizing setting that changes hourly with the light. When USA Weekend compiled their Most Beautiful Places in America list, Sedona claimed the top spot.
Sedona is surrounded by 1.8 million acres of national forest land and trails for hiking and biking that weave among the bristling forest of pinnacles, spires, buttes and domes. Yet, you are never far from the indulgences of town.
It is equal parts rugged, equal parts resort. Regarded by Native Americans as sacred, Sedona continues to be recognized as a place of healing and spiritual renewal. Many come to experience the vortex energy centers of Sedona. Others want to prowl the 40-plus art galleries lining the streets, or to receive soothing treatments from the dozens of spa facilities.
Whatever your intentions are, you will leave profoundly touched by the energy of this town.

What It’s Really Like To Ski In Europe

Things To Know About When Skiing In Europe

What It’s Really Like To Ski In Europe

Skiing in Europe isn’t just about clicking into your skis and schussing down some of the most famous slopes in the world. It’s part of an experience that can check every box of a dream trip.

Dancing the afternoon away on a sunny deck in ski boots during après ski, glühwein flowing and music bumping. Staying in a hotel that has been owned by one family for generations, and feeling like one of their long- lost relatives by the time you leave. Having delectable local dishes on the mountain that will make you reevaluate what on-mountain dining should be.

This is all before you even talk about the skiing. There’s a reason the Alps have provided the backdrop for numerous movies. The iconic mountains reach skyward above the villages below, the peaks breaking through the clouds above. Once you get to the top of the mountain after taking the gondola, tram, funicular, lift, or even train up, you get to see what the skiing is all about. Most of the resorts lie above tree line, which means the entire mountain is free rein. You won’t see the big fences that reinforce boundaries at other resorts. You go where your skis can take you; whether it’s an untouched powder field, or a cruiser that can take you to a neighboring town or even crossing country borders.

Skiing in Europe is an experience unlike any other. While you can have days on the mountain that can only be classified as epic, it’s the people, the food, and the culture that will make it a ski trip you will never forget.

Why I love an Early Season Ski Trip

Early season in the ski resorts

Why I love an Early Season Ski Trip

One of the most underrated times of year to hit the slopes is nearly upon us: early season in the ski resorts. These are the few precious weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas where you can find the amazing combination of uncrowded slopes and killer deals. Resorts will be starting to gear up for the holiday crowds, but the only people you will be sharing the slopes with prior to the holidays are locals and some in-the-know tourists looking to get their first turns of the year.

Since the properties aren’t as busy, you can score some unbelievable bargains coming to the mountains before Christmas. Anything from budget hotels and condos to the luxury resorts not only offer rates that are a fraction of the price you’ll find later in the year, but many of them will throw in a free night or additional discount to really sweeten the deal.

If you’ve never been skiing before because you think it’s too expensive, December beckons. Everything from lodging and lift tickets to ski rentals drop in price, and make that winter wonderland for you and your family within reach. There is no better way to prepare for winter than to spend your days surrounded by snow, and your nights curled up by a fireplace, hot drink in hand.

For those that love the five star experience, but would rather spend their money on living the dream with spa treatments, fine dining, and the famous mountain nightlife than all on lodging, the early season lets you have it all. Stay in a high end hotel where the service levels and ski access mean that the hardest thing you’ll have to do is decide where to après.

Whoever said you can’t have it all?
