DUBLIN DAY

Today enjoy a walking tour of Dublin city with your local guide. Or enjoy a round of golf at the Incredible Royal Dublin Golf Club.

Golf fees are not included. Please sign up ahead of time for it.

Dublin is a city with a soul, a place that has not lost sight of the fact that people are more fun than museums and that genuine human interaction is not the preserve of small villages. Founded in 841 by the Vikings, it is a city with an interesting past. Its many monuments tell of its history. Today, Dublin is the Cosmopolitan capital of the Irish Republic and a city of over one million people. Despite the many changes the city has witnessed during the last decade, it still remains a city ready to welcome all who wish to visit. Taking advantage of its compact size, the walking tour of Dublin allows visitors to soak in the atmosphere and buzz of the city, whilst enjoying an informative and entertaining tour.

Built in honor of Ireland’s patron saint, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral stands adjacent to the famous well where tradition has it Saint Patrick baptized converts on his visit to Dublin. The parish church of Saint Patrick on this site was granted collegiate status in 1191 and raised to cathedral status in 1224. The present building dates from 1220. The Cathedral is today the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland (a church of the Anglican communion). St Patrick’s is Gothic in style and its splendid interior is adorned with funeral monuments, such as The Boyle Family Memorial and the grave of Dean Jonathan Swift (author of Gulliver’s Travels). Swift was dean here until his death in 1745. The Chancel has ornate stained-glass windows, and spectacular choir stalls, once used by the knights of St Patrick, adjoin the Altar. The massive west towers, house a large peal of bells whose ringing tones are so much part of the character of Dublin.

Trinity College was established by Royal Charter in 1592; during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. It is Ireland’s oldest and indeed prestigious university and the present buildings date from c1750. Trinity College Library houses Ireland’s largest collection of books and manuscripts, and its principal treasure is the 8th-century hand-illuminated Book of Kells. It is considered to be the most striking manuscript ever produced in the Western world and one of the greatest masterpieces of early Christian
art.

Trinity College was the first university in Britain & Ireland to admit women –the first enrolment being in 1904. However, it was largely seen by the Catholic Church in Ireland as a ‘Protestant’ university, it forbade its members from attending. The ‘Ban’ was finally lifted in 1970. Notable students at Trinity College were Oliver Goldsmith, Oscar Wilde, and Bram Stoker.

Optional Inclusion (not included, please sign up ahead of time) Royal Dublin Golf Club:

Founded in 1885 by Sir John Lumsden, The Royal Dublin Golf Club is steeped in golfing history and presents a stern golfing examination on a truly magnificent links course that is widely accepted as one of the greatest links courses in the world. The links were originally designed by H.S.Colt, the world-famous golf architect from Sunningdale.
The Royal Dublin Golf Club has hosted many Irish championships, starting with the Irish Amateur Open back in 1894. The Royal Dublin Golf Club hosted The Carrolls Irish Open from 1983-1985 with Seve Ballesteros winning in 1983 and 1985 and Bernhard Langer winning in 1984. The Club has also regularly hosted the Irish Amateur Close and the Irish PGA.
Since 1889, The Royal Dublin Golf Club has been located on Bull Island, a sandbank formed when the Bull Wall was completed in 1825 by Captain William Bligh.
The Bull Island is a Unesco nature reserve, accessed by passing over a wooden bridge. Our championship links is 3 miles from Dublin city center and a 20-minute drive from Dublin Airport.

RING OF KERRY DAY

Start your day today in Killarney where you will enjoy a 1 hour jaunting car tour to Ross Castle.

Continue on to explore the Ring of Kerry.

The Ring of Kerry (166km) is the most famous and panoramic route in Ireland. The astonishing beauty of this large peninsula, Iveragh, comes from the great diversity of its scenery, which offers incessant contrasts. En route around the Ring, take in spectacular scenery – mountains, peat bogs, lakes, and magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean as one travels along the coast road. Leaving Killarney pass through Killorglin, famous for its Puck Fair, then to Glenbeigh where the cliff road affords panoramic views of the Dingle Peninsula and Dingle Bay. Continuing to Cahirciveen, you’ll pass the birthplace of our National hero, Daniel O’Connell. Next, continue on through peat bogs to the town of Waterville. Continue to Sneem Village, famous for its brightly colored houses. The road then continues through the mountains to Molls Gap and Ladies View with superb views of the famous Lakes of Killarney.

Kissane Sheep Farm

Set in the spectacular scenery of Molls Gap on the Ring of Kerry, Kissane Sheep Farm is a traditional, working sheep farm with approximately 1.000 mountain sheep and hundreds of lambs. The farm is run by John and Anne Kissane, as it has been run by generations of the family for the last 150 years. In May 2005, the farm was opened for visitors to enjoy and to learn about sheep farming in Ireland. Groups and individuals can visit the farm and enjoy its activities such as Sheepdog demonstrations, Sheep shearing demonstrations, bottle feeding the orphan (pet) lambs in season, Marked mountain walks, and a Puzzle Walk and Treasure Trail.

Situated on the Atlantic Ocean and bordering the Burren region, the Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland’s most spectacular sights. Standing 230 meters above the ground at their highest point and 8km long, the Cliffs boast one of the most amazing views in Ireland. On a clear day, the Aran Islands are visible in Galway Bay as well as the valleys and hills of Connemara. The cliffs reach their highest point just north of O’Brien’s Tower built by Cornelius O’Brien, a descendant of Brian Boru, to entertain his lady friends. A visit to the tower is also possible. The sweeping view across the Atlantic has recently been ranked the best ‘cliff-view’ on the planet by Conde Nast Traveler. The respected travel publication has voted the world-famous landmark at the top of a new chart of ‘ Nine Gorgeous Cliff Views That Rival The Grand Canyon’.

TRINITY COLLEGE & GUINNESS STOREHOUSE

Choose one of the optional tours or day at leisure in Dublin:

OPTIONAL TOUR ONE: This morning visit Trinity College & Book of Kells

Trinity was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth 1st on grounds confiscated from an Augustinian priory and is the oldest university in Ireland. The Campanile, erected in 1852, was built on what is believed to be the center of the monastery. Built to further the education of the ruling Anglo-Irish families, restrictions were imposed to prevent Catholics from attending courses. These restrictions were not fully lifted until the 1970s. Trinity however admitted women in 1902, earlier than most British universities. Most of the main buildings off the main square were built during the Georgian period, some of which replaced older buildings. Within its walls, visitors will be able to admire Parliament Square and its 18th-century edifices. Trinity College has had many famous students such as Jonathan Swift and Samuel Beckett who later became a lecturer in French at the university. The inter-denominational Church is very much worth a visit.

OPTIONAL TOUR TWO: Visit Jameson Distillery Bow St.

The Jameson Distillery Bow Street in Smithfield Village is located in the heart of Dublin city center. This old barley storehouse, once the center of distilling in Dublin, was renovated in 1998 and converted into a museum where all the secrets of Irish whiskey’s distillation will be revealed. An audio-visual show will introduce the history of this spirit and it is followed by a guided visit which will take visitors through the various stages of whiskey distilling from grain intake to malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation, maturation and finally bottling. The visit culminates in the Jameson bar with an opportunity for all to taste the signature Jameson drink. During the visit, a number of volunteers are selected to take part in a tasting session to compare a Jameson whiskey with a Scottish whisky and an American bourbon. Participants will receive a diploma for their achievements. Other facilities include the Distillery Gift Shop and public bar.

This afternoon visit the Guinness Storehouse

The Guinness Brewery in Dublin is Europe’s largest stout-producing brewery and home to the Guinness Storehouse. Opened in 1904, the Storehouse was an operational plant for fermenting and storing Guinness. Today it houses a very fine exhibition dedicated to the Guinness story. Visitors will discover what goes into making a pint of Guinness – the ingredients, the brewing process, the time, the craft, and the passion. The exhibition shows how the brew has been marketed and how it is today sold in over 150 countries. Once the tour has finished, the guest is invited to the Gravity Bar to enjoy their pint of Guinness. Regular demonstrations on the art of pulling a pint of Guinness also take place in the Storehouse. Launched on the fifth floor in 2011, “Five” at Guinness Storehouse, includes a small replica authentic Irish Bar, an 18th Century inspired Brewers Dining Hall, and a restaurant named Gilroy’s where guests enjoy a Guinness gastronomical experience driven entirely by the Irish tradition of wholesome local produce. Menus include local foods such as Ardsallagh goat’s cheese, Irish mussels from Carlingford, and the Waterford Blaas bread supplied by MD Bakery in Waterford. This area will host from time to time live cooking demonstrations using Guinness in the recipe and it includes an interactive recipe-sharing bank that allows visitors to take Guinness recipe cards home.

In the evening refresh in your hotel before enjoying an evening meal and entertainment.

Overnight, bed and breakfast at your hotel in the Dublin area.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cochem, Germany

On the day of our arrival, we’ll spend the night at a hotel in Cochem, before boarding the ship the next day.

Day 2: Cochem

Embarkation and check-in is at 2 p.m. in Cochem. After a welcome meeting with the crew, the tour leader will take you for a walk through this cozy and characteristic Moselle town, with steep wine-clad mountains, wooded hills, an impressive castle, and a picturesque square with beautiful timber-framed houses and cafes. A visit to Cochem’s majestic Reichsburg Castle is on the program.

Day 3: Cochem – Zell (39 km/24 mi.)

Following breakfast, you’ll cycle to Beilstein, one of the best-preserved historical villages on the Moselle. The ruins of Castle Metternich sit towering above the village, and you’ll have the opportunity to explore them. After leaving Beilstein you’ll pass Europe’s steepest vineyard – with slopes inclining up to 60 degrees – at Bremmer Calmont. Today’s tour ends in the wine village of Zell on the Moselle, well known in the industry for the wine Zeller Schwarze Katz. In Zell, we recommend taking the opportunity to get to know the good wines of the Moselle Valley.

Day 4: Zell on the Moselle – Bernkastel-Kues (45 km/27 mi.)

Today you’ll cycle from Zell to the romantic village of Traben-Trarbach, located on the Moselle’s left bank and famous for its Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) architecture. From there you pass through the wine city of Kröv – well-known for its popular Kröver wine – to Bernkastel-Kues, your destination for the night. The grand half-timbered houses that surround Bernkastel-Kues’s marketplace date back to the Middle Ages, and are a photographer’s delight. You’ll reach the barge in Kues after a tour through town.

Day 5: Bernkastel-Kues – Neumagen – Schweich (28 km/18 mi. or 54 km/34 mi.) | Schweich – Trier

From Bernkastel, the valley opens up and vineyards expand as far as the eye can see. Today we cruise past the heavy-hitters in the wine world: Brauneberg, Piesport, Trittenheim. Piesport is beloved by the Brits for the “little golden droplets.” Trittenheim lies in a sharp hairpin turn on the river surrounded by mountains coated with grapes. Around lunchtime, you will arrive in Neumagen, already in Roman times an important center of wine production. You can decide to join the barge from here or continue by bicycle to Schweich, where again the barge will be waiting for you. Once on board you will cruise to Trier, the oldest city in Germany. Trier was founded around 15 before Christ by Caesar Augustus under the name of Augusta Treverorum. As a trading town and administrative center, Trier flourished during the late imperial age. This Roman golden age has left us with a respectable number of monuments. Most authentic is the city gate Porta Nigra, which was built around 18 after Christ.

Day 6: Trier – Saarburg (28 km/18 mi.)

In the morning your tour leader will take you into Trier and walk you around in Roman history. There is also time to discover and enjoy Trier on your own.
After lunch, you will hop on your bicycles and follow the Mosel and Saar river to our next destination, Saarburg. Saarburg is an interesting old town situated in the most beautiful part of the Saar valley. Here the banks of the river are densely forested. The castle of Saarburg was built here in the middle of the 10th century. In the middle of town, you come across a waterfall 20 meters high. At the foot of this waterfall, there is an old mill, which is driven by the small river. In this part of town most of the old houses from the 17th and 18th century, which give Saarburg such a picturesque look, are still intact. Today there is no dinner on board. You can select one of the local restaurants in Saarburg.

Day 7: Saarburg – Remich (45 km/27 mi. or 53 km/32 mi.)

Today there are 2 cycling options. One is easy, but a bit longer along the rivers. The shorter option is a bit more challenging, through the hills. Whatever your choice is, the cycling will lead you into the Grand Duchy Luxembourg. Here the Moselle forms the border between Germany and Luxembourg. Luxembourg is a small country, but its capital (also called Luxembourg) is an important finance center and EU administrative city. On the way, at the Luxembourg side, we visit a wine cooperative, specializing in the so-called “Cremant”, say the Champagne of the
Moselle. Close to Remich you can admire a Roman mosaic floor. The tile floor which lies in its original place, was once the centerpiece in a palatial Roman villa. The scene (in 3 million individual tile pieces) reveals scenes from gladiator games in the amphitheater.

Day 8: Remich – Schengen | Schengen – Thionville (30 km/18 mi.) | Thionville – Metz

While having breakfast you will cruise to Schengen, where your cycling tour will start. The “Schengen agreement” is something everybody in Europe has heard of, whereas almost nobody knows that it is named after this little town in Luxembourg at the 3-country border. Soon we will cross the Luxembourg-French border and experience the outcome of this agreement: no border controls. We pass the fortress of Sierck-les-Bains, one of the palaces inhabited by the powerful Dukes of Lorraine. The route is lovely through the French countryside and friendly villages. Around lunchtime you will arrive in Thionville, the center of the steel industry until the 1980s. That might sound modern and industrial, but the city is ancient. The historic center shows us the medieval ramparts, lovely gardens, old streets, and St.Maximin Basilica. Here the ship is waiting to pick you up to cruise to Metz, another ancient city strategically situated on a Roman trading route. St.Etienne Cathedral is the 3rd largest Gothic church in France with flying buttresses and Marc Chagall stained glass windows. Metz is full of stunning architecture, flowers, and great cafes.

Day 9: Metz

End of tour. Disembarkation after breakfast, at around 9:30 a.m.

Day 9-11: Paris

After leaving the boat we’ll transfer via bus to Paris (approx 3.5 hours), where we’ll spend two nights in the Hotel Mercure Paris Alesia before flying back to the US.

Itinerary

Saturday: Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Sunday: At Sea

Monday: Rhodes, Greece

Tuesday: Bodrum, Turkey

Wednesday: Dalyan River, Turkey

Thursday: Santorini, Greece

Friday: Hydra, Greece

Saturday: Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

Athens

Athens is the historical capital of Europe, and the birthplace of democracy, arts, science and philosophy of western civilization. Home of Plato, Socrates, Pericles, Euripides, Sophocles, Aeschylus. Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities. It’s recorded history spanning around 3.400 years and it is being inhabited since the 11th millennium B.C. E. Today, under the shadow of Parthenon, the contemporary urban scenery of the sprawling city reflects its exciting history, and its multi- cultural modern personality.

Rhodes

Rhodes has a long and impressive history; it’s a place where the strong medieval aspect blends with the traditional Greek one. It is also an island with great natural beauty: the lovely beaches face the pine woods on the mountainsides; the mountain villages overlook the seaside towns; and the archaeological sites, the medieval monuments, and the cosmopolitan resorts arranged in the traditional style all conspire to make the popularity of this destination so hard to resist, even to a demanding traveler.

Bodrum

Turkey’s top resort, Bodrum, is more than the town of that name. The Bodrum Peninsula, extending west into the Aegean and bordering the Mediterranean, actually has a dozen resort towns and villages along its shores, of which famous Bodrum is but one. Each has its own beaches, hotels and other pleasures. Although Bodrum was Turkey’s original south Aegean seaside resort, and has the richest history on the peninsula with its crusader castle and Mausoleum, other villages—now grown to towns—are becoming almost as well-known.

The Dalyan

The Dalyan is part of the Turkish Riviera, some of the most beautiful coastal territory in the Mediterranean. Most famous for the breeding ground of the endangered loggerhead sea turtle at Itzuzu Beach, the shores of the Dalyan River provide access to several of Turkey’s historical sites. Near the fishing town of Dalyan visitors may find the ancient Carian city of Kaunos, while travelers on the river, navigating through the dense reeds, may view the Lycian tombs, carved directly into the cliffs over the river.

Santorini

Santorini, known since ancient times as Thira, is one of the most famous islands in the world. The fact that you can sit in front of the caldera, enjoy local dishes, a drink or a coffee while gazing at the remarkable beauty of an active volcano is priceless! The island is actually a group of islands consisting of Thira, Thirassia, Aspronissi, Palea and Nea Kameni in the southernmost part of the Cyclades.

Hydra

Hydra is a popular sailing destination. A rich naval tradition and a cosmopolitan island ambience are the defining characteristics of Hydra – a popular island in the Argosaronic Gulf – which attracts every year many personalities and jet-setters from Greece and abroad. This was the favourite destination and place of residence of painter Nikos Hatzikyriakos-Ghika, Leonard Cohen, and Henry Miller. It is also the birthplace of painter Panagiotis Tetsis, and of many other famous artists, writers etc. The island’s great beauty was appreciated also by celebrities such as Maria Callas, Pablo Picasso, and Sophia Loren.
