DAY 16: CAIRNS and OUTER GREAT BARRIER REEF

Enjoy Full Breakfast at the hotel. Wait at the hotel front entrance for your courtesy shuttle transfer to Cairns Marina from where you will depart for a full day cruise to the Outer Great Barrier Reef.

Michaelmas Cay was formed by the accumulation of broken coral, shells, and remains of calcareous algae continually washed over the reef by currents. Seeds deposited by visiting birds over time and the resulting vegetation helped to stabilize the cay. The formation of beach rock (sand and other reef remnants cemented into a rock by the action of algae) further stabilized the cay. The seeds carried in by the birds and the waves help vegetation flourish which in turn provides an ideal habitat for the seabirds to roost and nest. The Cay is rich with a myriad of sea life including green sea turtles (which occasionally nest on the cay), mollusks and invertebrates of all kinds, and hundreds of species of tropical reef fish including Humphead Maori Wrasse. The reef surrounding the Cay is especially renowned for its abundance of giant clams. The reef lagoon offers excellent swimming and snorkeling areas, quality snorkeling equipment is provided free of charge and the Marine Biologists on board can introduce you to a whole new world. For the more adventurous, SCUBA diving on the Great Barrier Reef is amongst the best in the world, both introductory dives for the beginner and guided dives for the certified diver are available, both incur an additional cost, and provided you have obtained diving certifications prior.
Guided snorkeling tours are also available (at additional cost).
Or you can choose to stay dry and explore the stunning reef world one meter underwater from the semi-submersible vessel or an underwater observatory.
